The Celts: A Sceptical History
by Simon Jenkins
Celts sell books! This is an ambitious, highly readable narrative in which Simon Jenkins attempts to track ‘evidence’ for the Celts, from prehistory to the present-day. Throughout the book, the reader is aware of a lurking rejection of all Celtic labelling while, at the same time, the terms ‘Celt’ and ‘Celtic’ are persistently used to describe the peoples inhabiting the ‘fringes’ around England – Scotland, Wales and Ireland – together with other communities bordering the Atlantic – the Isle of Man, Cornwall, Brittany and Galicia.
