Rhapsody and Other Stories
by Dorothy Edwards and Arrest Me, For I Have Run Away by Stevie Davies

by Dorothy Edwards

Parthian, £8.99

‘Rhapsody’, which opens this reissue of Dorothy Edwards’ 1927 short story collection, relates the tale of a man with a ‘neat and well-ordered personality’ who is resolutely pursuing a new lover while waiting for his sick wife to die and their son to be dispatched to boarding school. It is the combination of the man’s orderliness with the relish he brings to his diabolical plot which renders his behaviour obscene. Edwards skewers him with characteristic efficiency: ‘Everett said excitably, “Please have a cress sandwich.”’
