Participants in the Wales Governance Centre’s Welsh Political Barometer poll (published in February 2016) were asked which issues were the most important facing the country. The issue which the highest percentage of respondents selected as important was immigration and asylum, well above health, education, the economy and ten other key concerns. Furthermore, when participants were asked which issues were important for them in the forthcoming Assembly election, immigration and asylum were deemed the second most important issue after health, even though immigration and asylum are not devolved areas. These results may come as a shock to some, but doubtless not to others.
