Takeaway: Stories from a Childhood Behind the Counter

In 1988 the Lucky Star Chinese takeaway opened in the ‘sleepy nowheresville’ of Beddau, about twelve miles north-west of Cardiff. This little town had been crushed by the Thatcherite closing of the mines. Angela Hui, the young daughter of the takeaway’s owners, recalls the area as halfway between beautiful and bleak, with fluffy white sheep and high unemployment rates. Her parents had no particular love of cooking and no wish for careers in catering: they had come from Hong Kong and catering was the only work available to them in Britain.
