Our editor Emily Trahair is currently receiving cancer treatment and working reduced hours, and looks forward to returning fully to Planet when recovered. She would like to thank everyone who has stepped in to help at the last minute to ensure the magazine can be published, and everyone who has got in touch with their good wishes; and hopes you will also enjoy the May issue – which is already underway.

Bells in the Storm

Editorial

Helen Sandler

Helen Sandler draws on her personal experience to discuss ways in which at community level we can respond to the myriad crises discussed in the issue, and remain alert to warnings for the future.

Last summer, Planet editor Emily Trahair wrote about ‘the so-called “perma-crisis” we are living through’ (Editorial, Issue 246). She asked how anyone could possibly respond to multiple crises, including pandemic, wildfires, flooding, poverty, and the invasion of Ukraine, all scrolling past in their social media feeds. Then somehow, in six pages, she managed to skewer neo-imperialism and sum up a call to action that could change the world, proposing a unified movement to ‘by-pass elite and state interests’. If you are one of many Planet readers who keep their back issues neatly (or messily) shelved, please feel free to reread it now. Doing so myself has made me a little nervous about stepping in to write the editorial in Emily’s temporary absence (see box – we wish her well!).
