Passion is in danger of becoming a clichéd emotion. ‘Food is my passion,’ they all say nervously on Masterchef just before they overcook their rice or underdo their fish. It still counts for a great deal though, particularly in poetry, and particularly at a point in time when academia, which is cerebral and hierarchical by nature, has discovered that creative writing courses bring in lots of lucrative students. You have to be a tenacious and anarchic character for your output to survive the lure of analysis and advanced degrees unscathed.
