During lockdown there was a scramble for a simpler way of life: maybe we’d wanted this for years. Those who could afford it abandoned the cities for a rural life. Those who couldn’t wandered the streets on their one walk a day, looking for flowers, previously known as weeds, growing unchecked in the city’s cracks, or joined houseplant swap groups on Facebook. At the same time, the forced isolation and the fear of a looming and unknown catastrophe affected the mental health of many, particularly children and young people.
