With illness, the uncertainty in life becomes certain. But with epilepsy, where there is loss of consciousness, there is an additional factor – an interruption in the sense of self. Margiad Evans describes one occasion when she experienced this loss of her sense of being, security and independence: ‘I had fallen through Time, Continuity and Being’. Only her relationship with her husband and her neighbours created her sense of continuity of the self. After a fit, ‘things no longer flowed’ and she asked, ‘Who am I? and ‘Where have I been?’
