Where do poems come from? Some are found, some worked for and some given. On Christmas Eve 2017 I received a wonderful and unexpected present from Kenya. An email from a distant relative of mine I had only just discovered came with a dozen photographs of his grandfather and great uncle who fought with the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment in the Great War. I had been researching my Berkshire and Pembrokeshire families and the First World War for a talk I was planning as part of the 1918-2018 centenary. As it progressed it became clear that the Pembrokeshire Barrahs and their relatives from the villages of Llangwm and Freystrop in the Dau Gleddau area in the heart of the county offered a story which would easily fill an hour-long lecture space.
