On the Red Hill

by Mike Parker

William Heinemann, £16.99

On The Red Hill enlists a giddy range of cultural references to tell its story, many of which are rarely gathered in the same place. The book begins with a financial statement concerning the sale of a farmhouse, in 1911, before moving on to a touching account of a civil-partnership ceremony for two elderly men in Machynlleth, in 2006. Between the gaps separating these legal exchanges, author Mike Parker weaves intricate patterns out of love, landscape and loss, exploring the contexts that allow for a sense of place or belonging.
