For the last forty-seven years Elizabeth Mavor’s biography of the Ladies of Llangollen has been the most substantial work on one of the most famous female same-sex couples in history. This is surprising, given that over the last four decades the understanding of LGBT lives has changed radically. New work is needed to explore the influence of the ‘Ladies’ both contemporaneously and later. This has now been partially addressed in Fiona Brideoake’s book.
