Frank Olding reviews
The Old Red Tongue: An Anthology of Welsh Literature Edited by Gwyn Griffiths and Meic Stephens
and
Cuddle Call? New and Selected Poems By Ifor ap Glyn
Both these collections generously allow bilingual access to Welsh-language literature. It seems deeply ironic to be reviewing The Old Red Tongue within a few weeks of the deaths of both its editors, Gwyn Griffiths and Meic Stephens. The ambition and pure, dogged labour represented by this 1,000-page book is breathtaking and we can only mourn the passing of two people who certainly did their ‘twrn da o waith’ (‘good shift of work’) for the languages and cultures of Wales.
