The News Where You Are: Reflections on the Welsh Media

There are many good reasons to learn Welsh, one being the ability to compare the news output of the BBC in our two languages. They are often curiously, even hilariously, different. Take the two half‐hour flagship TV shows: S4C’s 9pm Newyddion attempts to drill seriously into Welsh, UK and international stories, and make the viewer feel part of a modern, pluralist European nation. By contrast, BBC1’s 6.30pm Wales Today plies a wheezy parochialism in a format unchanged for decades.
