In the International Eisteddfod Pavilion in Llangollen there’s a large framed photograph that I mentally captioned ‘a nation on its knees’ when I first saw it. Long since relegated to a back room, it depicts the Queen and Prince Philip progressing across the maes, in the late 1950s or early 1960s, escorted by the ‘great and the good’.
