A favourite phrase in Welsh is ‘Cymro gorau, Cymro oddi cartref’, ‘the best Welshman is a Welshman away from home’. I love its inherent snark, an arched eyebrow at the prospect of yet another expat’s teary, beery semi-memories. Yet the place of the exile in Welsh life is crucial, and driven often by harsh realities.
