As a Welsh landscape photographer, I’ve been working on my ‘Hidden Wales’ project for about three years. Needing fresh photographic inspiration, away from north Wales’ honeypot locations, I began searching off-the-beaten-track places, and found abandoned quarries, derelict churches, ruins and the like. I’ve always been fascinated by forgotten places and the strange beauty of their decay. One afternoon I photographed an unexceptional ruined cottage. I knew nothing of its history but I liked the gnarled, bent hawthorn stood nearby and used it to frame my composition.
