O Positive
by Joe Dunthorne and The Bramble King by Catherine Fisher

by Joe Dunthorne

Faber & Faber, £10.99

Joe Dunthorne’s debut full-length poetry collection, O Positive, is a powerful and thought-provoking exploration of the darker facets of human nature that linger beneath the surface of seeming mundanity. Its cover promises a collection that ‘catches us off-guard […] where poems shift from laughter to slaughter in a moment’, and, in this respect, the work does not disappoint. A mixture of nononsense practicality and heightened perceptions of reality, the poems in O Positive are filled with grimly sardonic humour that is both amusing and, at times, quite heart-wrenching.
