‘Why did they chase their gods?’ Truly, this was not the thought that troubled me as I made my way towards Cardiff Central train station that early Thursday morning. Although the question repeated itself in my mind, I simply ignored it. Rather, what concerned me was the peculiarly meandering way of reaching Hay-on-Wye via train: why I had to not only cross the border, but also be picked up by car to get to the town itself. How was I supposed to know why in order to get to some places in Wales, one had to travel via England? Maybe it was an English trick to keep an eye on the Welsh language, or monitor their populace for signs of being minded towards independence, who knows.
