Artist, Traveller, Country Squire
by Richard Veasey
In Temple Gardens opposite the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells a bronze figure stands one foot perched on a rock above the plaque ‘Thomas Jones 1742 - 1803’. Just over the border forty miles away in a gallery in Ludlow sits a well-illustrated catalogue of Miles Wyn Cato, the dealer who specialises in, and has done much to champion, Welsh Art. ‘New stock is available from £30 to £9,500’, the introduction reads. It goes on to describe ‘as a rare occasion’ the availability of A Welsh Landscape by Thomas Jones, with its ‘beautifully rendered light of the sky and clouds’, acknowledging the much sought after ‘originality of his genius’ in his popular Italian watercolour views.
