‘Happy the hero who, after a lifetime of glorious achievement, in death finds a biographer worthy of his memory,’ wrote Jan Morris, reviewing Artemis Cooper’s biography of Patrick Leigh Fermor. We cannot know what Morris, who died in 2020, would have made of Paul Clements’s attempt to write the story of her life, but I think she would have approved – mostly.
