77, 917 people are currently employed by the NHS in Wales.1 What this tells us primarily is that the NHS is an important employer in Wales. However, what this figure also tells us is that an increase in NHS employees by 1,629 between 2016 and 2017 is not enough to relieve the pressure on the service, which is caused by a number of factors, chief among them a lack of money, due to ongoing austerity.
